My name is Liz, remarried with two of my own and two newly acquired teenage children. My passion for bears began when my daughter started collecting bears at the age of five, she is now twelve going on twenty. She soon learnt that the artist bears had far more character than those factory manufactured, which led to my experimentation with bear making.
Once the bug bit nothing could stop me, I started playing with my own designs about 4 years ago and enjoy this part of bear making the best. Love to see my design on paper come together in the fur, the more wacky the more fun in the making - my biggest inspiration comes from another South African artist, Lisa Durbach, who has been a great mentor with advice on both fabrics and design. If I had one wish in life it would be to own every bear she has ever created. I have made bears of all sizes. Still a mad collector of other artists kits and patterns and have always got at least one bear on the go at any given time.
I lived in Westville, a suburb of Durban situated on South Africa's Eastcoast and now living in Whales, UK. My inspiration for new designs comes from all forms, be it a picture in my mind, a cartoon character or a lovely piece of mohair, even a special outfit I think would look nice on a bear.
Each Walker bear is either a one off design or of very limited edition. My "real" Millennium collection - namely "Wacky" Walker bears, where each bear designed in the year 2001 carries a lucky South African penny buried deep within its stomach.
